Exercise #1 – Roundtable Readings Discussion (Mo 6/14)

Instructions: In academic conferences, the round table format is a low-stakes opportunity to discuss research, ideas, and contributions on a general topic. Usually, round tables are organized as an opportunity to have a relaxed conversation, and to interact with an audience. This is the formal definition of a round table “Round table is a form of academic discussion. Participants agree on a specific topic to discuss and debate. Each person is given equal right to participate, as illustrated by the idea of a circular layout referred to in the term round table. ” (Wikipedia)

For our next class, each person will read one of the assigned chapters/articles, I will be moderating, and Prof. Stephanie Rupp will serve also as a commentator on the discussion. I want you to focus on the following questions for this discussion:

1- What are some of the general ideas you identify in the article?
2- What were the methods used by the author(s) in the article? Did they use interviews, participant observation, archival research?
3- How is(are) the author(s) using food to document cultural practices? In other words, what is happening with food in this article?
4- What is something you liked about the article? What is something that could be done differently if you had the opportunity to rewrite the article?
